Perceptual Learning, Categorical Perception, and Cognitive Permeation

چکیده
Proponents of cognitive penetration often argue for the thesis on basis combined intuitions about categorical perception and perceptual learning. The claim is that beliefs penetrate perceptions in course learning to perceive categories. I this "diachronic" false. In order substantiate a robust notion penetration, enable must describe particular ability subjects learn. However, they cannot do so, since help with instruct learners employ previously existing abilities. better approach recognizes we can have sophisticated causal precursors learning, but process itself operate outside influence.

Is color "categorical perception" really perceptual?
Roberson and Davidoff (2000) found that color categorical perception (CP; better cross-category than within-category discrimination) was eliminated by verbal, but not by visual, interference presented during the interstimulus interval (ISI) of a discrimination task. On the basis of this finding, Roberson and Davidoff concluded that CP was mediated by verbal labels, and not by perceptual mechani...
متن کاملProcessing German Vowel Quantity: Categorical Perception or Perceptual Magnet Effect?
The German vowel system shows a complex structure based on the interaction between vowel duration and formant structures between short and long cognates. This leads to the question how vowel duration is processed. The perception of vowel duration in German native speakers was tested by an identification test, a goodness rating and an adaptive discrimination test. The test results show a sharp b...
متن کاملAcquisition of categorical color perception: a perceptual learning approach to the linguistic relativity hypothesis.
Color perception can be categorical: Between-category discriminations are more accurate than equivalent within-category discriminations. The effects could be inherited, learned, or both. The authors provide evidence that supports the possibility of learned categorical perception (CP). Experiment 1 demonstrated that observers' color discrimination is flexible and improves through repeated practi...
متن کاملCategorical perception effects induced by category learning.
The authors report a series of studies designed to determine whether effects similar to those observed in the innate categorical perception of color and phonemes are induced during the learning of simple unidimensional categories and more complex multidimensional ones. In Experiment 1 no evidence was found for such effects when stimuli varied on 1 dimension. Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrated a w...
متن کاملPre-cueing, Perceptual Learning and Cognitive Penetration
In The Principles of Psychology, James (1981) suggested that attending to a stimulus can make it appear more “vivid and clear.” Pre-cueing, the procedure in which a cue stimulus is presented to direct a subject’s attention to the location of a test stimulus, has been used to test James’ hypothesis (Posner, 1978, 1980; Carrasco et al., 2004, 2006; Yeshurun and Rashal, 2010; Carrasco, 2011; Kravi...
